Established in 1924, the Winter Games were originally held in the same year as the Summer Games. From 1994 onward, the two events were separated and scheduled on alternating four-year cycles, two years apart. The Winter Games are usually held in February and last 17 days. The Winter Olympics include about 110 events in 15 sports. The games attract more than 2,900 athletes from about 90 countries.

The 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics will be held in Italy from February 6 – 22, with the sports and venues spread across the city of Milan and the slopes of Cortina.
